Throughout history, various stereotypes related to women's beauty existed, identifying it with fair skin, tall stature, and a slim figure, which led to exclusion and racism. This remains a challenge today, although thanks to the fight of empowered women, the direction of beauty standards has been changed. It was through this struggle that Afro-descendant women achieved the highest honor by being crowned as the most beautiful women on the planet.
For this reason, the first call to elect the representative of Afro beauty and culture worldwide begins in Peru. The pageant was initiated by María Fairelough, a Peruvian woman who, at the age of eighteen, began participating in various beauty contests when stereotypes were still prevalent.
María Fairelough began her journey in the 1980s and stood out in various contests for her personality, culture, poise, and elegance. The titles she held are as follows:
• Miss Peru USA
• Miss South America and the Caribbean (Miami, Florida)
• Miss Bergenline (New Jersey)
• Miss Latin America
• Miss Top Black Model (New York)
Because of this, she also started her career in modeling, participating in various events in New York.
Given her experience and the absence of a beauty pageant that empowers Afro-Peruvian women and highlights our race's cultural contribution to Peru and the world, Miss Afro Peru was born. With the mission to promote equality and visibility for Afro-Peruvian women, revalue our beauty, culture, and identity, and make the queen the spokesperson for Afro-Peruvian women, this pageant seeks to bring a message of hope, social inclusion, and equal opportunities for all to every community.
Miss Afro Peru was just the first step, but the real goal has always been Miss Afro International. This pageant not only opens the doors to a national platform but also encourages candidates to shine internationally, demonstrating that Afro-descendant beauty knows no boundaries.
Be the ambassador of Afro-descendant women and, through your crown, the voice of the entire Afro community, starting a journey full of opportunities and achievements.
This queen and representative could be you. You are Afro-descendant, and you matter!
